C. Charging

1. Transportation Electrification Committee

http://mydocs.epri.com/docs/PublicMeetingMaterials/1006/6XNN9RQUZ78/E234095_TEC_Meeting_Materials.pdf

Interesting document from the June 2010 meeting of the Transportation Electrification Committee.

Document includes agenda, minutes, list of attendees, outline of relevant codes and standards, and copies of presentations. SAE's J1772 is only a very small part of the vehicle charging universe.

2. Nice overview of EV charging. Shows 'cartoon' view of an EV, how Level 1, 2, 3, and battery swap charging works.

There is a simple, but interesting, graph under the "Field Test" category that shows mileage per test vehicle. Most of the 20 vehicle's data is missing...but one is out to approximately 150,000 miles. They don't say when this was or why....but a good piece of info just the same.

Here are the 3 versions of Nissan Leaf PPT.

Apparently a Google account is needed to access these Google-docs.
Are they available "in the wild"?

Hmmm ... I just looked around. There doesn't seem to be a way to make them open to everyone without a gmail id. Anyone knows ?

Otherwise I'll put them in some file upload site.

...AESC is Nissan's joint battery company. Nissan (51%) and NEC (49%) make Lithium Manganese 'laminate' cells

AESC Battery Technology - Leaf Battery Cell, Module, and Pack Information

Follow the left-side links under 'Technology' for a full review of the Leaf battery.

That's interesting. In particular I noted the comparison of the laminated battery vs. cylindrical battery in terms of temperature rise during discharge. Significant difference, and may take some of the air out of the argument that the Leaf's cooling design is inferior to Tesla's. Since the Tesla uses the cylindrical 18650 cells, it would appear they have more heat to deal with so liquid cooling may be necessary for them, but not for Leaf.

The Tesla battery pack is not spread out flat like the Leaf's, so there is not nearly as much opportunity for free air cooling. Also, Tesla power levels are higher for both charging and discharging.
