At 3 years and six weeks old my electronic parking brake has failed, giving a code of C10E4 and a repair quote of $3,543 (£2,172 I am in the UK) from Nissan. They don't want to make a good will gesture.

I am hoping I can get it fixed for less than that! Does anyone know which fuse would cover the EPB control module and actuator, as that seems a sensible place to start. Does anyone know where in the car the EPB control module is, as replacing it from a wrecked vehicle might be the best option?

Any other thoughts or ideas are very welcome!

The control module is only $405 (MSRP) here, and $325 from a discount Nissan parts vendor. How come so much from your dealer? There can't be that much labour involved?

Behind the rear seat and under the luggage floor front finisher, on the left of the car. Item #8 in diagram B

Thankyou very much, that's very helpful!! Is there any indication in the documentation that the part number would be different for a right hand drive car or does it apply to both? My quote mentions connector B23 and B21, do you know if that is the two connectors on the EPB module itself?

Thanks again, that gives me a sensible target price to aim for...!

Suggest you read the August thread about a do it yourself correction of a parking brake problem caused by corrosion.

At the price the dealer has quoted sounds like they are replacing everything.
Need to know what is really wrong.
Might be much less £ to just repair or replace that and reset the codes using LEAF Spy Pro.

Flaninacupboard: Can you say something about how frequently you used that parking brake? Can you think of anything that might have caused it to have failed so soon?

I didn't own it for it's first 18,000 miles, but in it's last 7k (since March)I have rarely used it, really just when parking on a hill. I don't think it's a mechanical wear problem, just an electronics one.

I wouldn't let them off that easy. Ask them for the quote on paper (you are hearing impaired, so a quote over the phone just isn't going to do). Have them itemize it as well (broken down into parts cost, labor cost per hour, and estimated number of hours for the repair). Then follow up with the service manager. Ask him how many labor hours Nissan estimates the job would take to complete (Nissan does provide this information). Also ask them what the MSRP is for the control module and compare that to the quote. Somewhere along the way, they should be confronted about that cost- because it's insulting.

The cost is almost all for the part:

£1730.98 + VAT (our tax is 20%) is $3,371

Which makes sense, there isn't much labour involved in going in the plastic hump and undoing two connectors.

Sorry, but that's a hilarious price.

Sounds like one side of the Atlantic or the other got a decimal point in the wrong place!

Let us know how it works out after you give some hell to Nissan UK HQ (I presume you will?)

Have you tried to get a repair quote from another dealer? Might be interesting to see if there is any variation.
Yes, I've had a very similar price from two totally unconnected dealers!

At that price I'd be inclined to just do without. I rarely use the parking brake anyway - only on steepish hills...
I rarely use it myself, but unfortunately leaving it is not an option. Our annual MOT inspection checks the parking brake. If it's not functioning the cars fails and I can no longer drive the car on public roads, my next inspection is due in July.

If the parking brake is required for safety and the car is unsafe without a working parking brake, then it seems that you have a good case to bring up to the Nissan regional manager about your car being unsafe. Although the warranty for normal things expires after 3 years, safety issues should be covered longer.

Ah yes, I forgot that the UK has something that we don't have here but should: real safety inspections...
