IIRC, the metal Key is just that--a mechanical metal key. the rest of the fob has the chip.

The key does have a chip. You can use the key without the fob by pressing the start button with the plastic part of the key. It's a backup if the fob is dead or damaged.

I was curious and tried it on my 2012 and also can verify that the metal key/plastic cap doesn't have the RFID chip. It is located in the rest of the fob, as I had assumed.1932highboy said:
