2014 Leaf: charger relay trips continously on timer settings

On my brand new 2014 Nissan Leaf SV model the mechanical relays that initiate the charging keeps tripping continuously when the charging timer is set. This happens only when the charging timer is set. Pressing the timer override initiates the charge fine and the charging completes without any issues. But once the charging is completed the tripping starts all over again. Actually the constant repeated relay-tripping noise woke me up around 2 am, right after the charging completed. I took this video at that time. Very easily reproducible and happens all the time.

For now until this problem is resolved I cannot use the timer, which is annoying as the battery will sit at 100% charge for much longer than it should.

It is disappointing that my 2011 Leaf had ZERO issues. Everything worked as expected, but on this I hit upon a rather non-trivial issue right on day one. Wondering if there is anything I need to check before I run to the dealer.

Has anyone seen anything like this ? The short 1 minute video in my previous post will clearly illustrate what the problem is.

thanks
Jay

Jay,
I have never seen any LEAF do this before. Time for a stop back at the dealer service center :(

What does it do if you charge it with the 120 volt EVSE from Nissan ?

Definitely I'd get it looked at asap. While the relays are robust, it seems like they will go through a year's worth of cycles in under an hour -- both the car and the evse.

I didn't try with the Nissan supplied L1 EVSE yet. The cable is nicely packed in the bag in the trunk I was a little reluctant taking it out.

I will check this out with a public Chargepoint charger and also with the L1 EVSE and report back.

Some more information. No such problems were seen in Charge Point, Blink L2s or Nissan supplied L1 units. So I presume this is a Clippercreek LCS-25 specific issue.

I was told by another friendly member of this forum that he believes that Clippercreek has a solution for this and I need to contact them. And sure enough, I contacted Clippercreek and the phone rep said they are working on a solution for the problem they are seeing only with 2014 Leafs, and most likely I will get a replacement unit.

I will let you all know when I learn more.

I noticed in your video the lights were not blinking like a charge timer is set or that the vehicle is charging, what percent was your vehicle at?

As I had noted in my first post, that video was taken right after the charging completed (at 100%). The behavior is the same before the charging starts ie. when the Leaf is waiting for the timer to expire.

My 2013 Leaf did this with a refurbished Clipper Creek L-1 wall-mount charger. CC fixed it for free even though they didn't refurbish or sell it. They told me it was an improperly wired J1772 plug. The unit originally had another plug on it, and an Ebay dealer changed a bunch over to J1772. They all had the issue from what I gather..

Solved. ClipperCreek sent me a new one and the timer works fine now.

Great service from ClipperCreek. The rep I spoke to understood the problem immediately and offered to send me new one.

Special thanks to a mynissanleaf.com forum member, who is also apparently a Nissan test specialist in Arizona, in response to my post alerted me to the possibility that this is known ClipperCreek problem.

Crap! I think the same thing just happened with my new 2015 SV and 3 year old LCS-25. Fortunately, we have some good local reps for Clipper Creek, so I hope they can get the problem resolved. Thanks for nailing this one!
