When I press and hold the VDC button for a sufficient amount of time, the indicator on the gauge cluster goes out and pressing the button thereafter doesn't toggle the indicator anymore and seems to have any effect. Would anyone happen to know what the car is thinking/doing at this point?

I think it is a failsafe. Some older BMW's do the same thing. If you hold traction control button for too long, it
re-enables traction control and disables the button until vehicle restart.
Supposedly, someone might engage that with a knee or random object poking the button.
Or switch malfunction. In that case, it enables the system and disables the switch.

On the other hand, some other BMW's engage santa-mode. Disables not only slip control but also skid control. aka drifting time.
But additional indicators light up in that case.
