^Yep, very common. Defog is much more effective with dry air. Not all cars "tell you" that the AC compressor is running.

I believe that heater will turn on if you have your temperature setting higher than what the current cabin temperature is.. so you either dial down you temperature or manually turn of the heater after turning the defroster on.
