I saw the below article talking about a company which sells reconditioned EV batteries for $800 with 1 year warranty

https://www.forbes.com/sites/tonybradley/2014/04/09/replacing-a-dead-prius-hybrid-battery-doesnt-have-to-cost-thousands-of-dollars/#40fc73f43ee9

Does it make sense to buy a used Nissan Leaf for under 7K and then replace the battery with reconditioned one?

Total cost will be $8,700 with a brand new battery. This is really cheap. Am I missing something here?

I'm afraid that article and the low price of $800 is for replacing a Prius battery, which is much smaller and cheaper than a Leaf battery. You can still do what you're proposing, but the replacement is only available through a recent program by Nissan, and so far is only available in Japan. See https://insideevs.com/nissan-introduces-refabricated-batteries-for-older-leaf-in-japan-from-new-4r-plant/ and https://electrek.co/2018/03/26/nissan-leaf-battery-pack-replacement-program/

The article has "Prius" in the title. The first sentence mentions "Toyota Prius" and there is a picture of a Prius. Either this topic is a prank or reading is dead. Maybe Forbes is paying people to post click-bait.

I apologize for my mess

I was trying to say which I had to mention in the beginning, does Nissan Leaf have similar batteries?

My goal is to get a used cheap electric car, these cars will probably have an almost dead battery. The intention was to replace it with a reconditioned cheap battery and use it for many more miles and years.

When I search autotrader for the cheapest electric car regardless of brand , nissan leaf seems to be everywhere. I am not sure why. The cheapest in Houston area is $8K, I was planning to replace the battery at a cost of $800 and drive it another 10 years.

Appearantly it is not possible

In another year or two the refurbished packs should be available here, but they will have just 80% or a little more of the original range. Maybe the first ones will have ~90%, but they will be warranted for only 80%.

Thanks

Just talked to a local company in Houston that said they only sell reconditioned batteries for hybrid but not for all electric cars

I said why and they said the money is in hybrid batteries not in all electric car batteries

I said why

but she did not answer

do you guys know why?

The cost of a battery approaches the used cost of a whole car. Nissan's program for the Leaf requires the old battery back and costs $6000. Other cars cost more.

If you think there is a cheap replacement you are dreaming.
