Out here $3K pretty much gets you a new 200A service. I'm sure if you shop around you will find an electrician that will not try to retire after every jobDreaderus said:

My electrician charged me $185 to hard wire my 240v/40a Eaton ESEV to my panel. Of course the panel was in my garage, it had the necessary additional capacity and the ESEV was mounted only a few feet from the panel. The Eaton ESEV cost about $550US.
