Hello, I am looking for a reliable 240v EVSE that plugs in, but not the EVSEupgrade.com thing because of the lease rules. I have looked at a few different options, but I was curious how reliable and safe some of these are. I saw an Eaton one, only 24 amps, but I was told for 125 more I can get a 30 amp version. Is Eaton good? What about JuiceBox, is that a safe route to go? I want a portable EVSE that will last and wont damage the car (can it damage the car, sense it isn't actually a charger, but only an EVSE?).

Would JuiceBox be good and portable? And how do I make it outdoors safe, as my 240v outlet and car is outside?
http://tinyurl.com/JuiceBoxEVSE" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (if anyone wants to teach me how to name URLs and make it like this, that would be appreciated as well)

I'm kind of new to commenting on the forums, I mostly read posts, like the ICE'ing thread, but I didn't really see my questions above answered… I can't afford a 1000 dollar EVSE like the Power Xpress. Thanks for the help, everyone…

I build OpenEVSE units for fun but I really think that you should send your stock brick to ingineer for an upgrade. I think the Nissan unit is about the most waterproof unit out there.

I recently traded in my car with the EVSE converted to an openEVSE unit and an adapter for 120V. They never gave it a second thought. I think I could have had bricks in the bag and they still would have been happy.

Why not? See http://evseupgrade.com/?main_page=faq_info&fcPath=5&faqs_id=8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

No one can really know yet if the juicebox is safe and reliable, so far based on their kickstarter updates only 10 incomplete kits have been shipped so far.

If you are looking for DIY then check out OpenEVSE. Links are in my signature. 500+ have been built and kits ship right away.

For non DIY evseupgrade is a great service.

I heard evse upgrade will trade your upgraded one back for a normal one when your lease is over. Its worth asking them.
I'm not sure there's a need to ask. I posted http://evseupgrade.com/?main_page=faq_info&fcPath=5&faqs_id=8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; addressing this earlier.

If one is concerned about revisionist history on the web, one can always submit pages to http://archive.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. See http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=9553" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. Anyone and everyone who comes across web pages that are worth preserving for future reference/posterity really should do their duty! :D

Thats good to hear, and I read the free downgrade link on the forum as well… I feel this is the best value. Thanks for the help, everyone!

Here's another option:

Primarily intended for the Rav4, but certainly can be used with a LEAF.

Now, just $135 for the 70 amp J1772 plug for those converting their Tesla Mobile Connector ("MC" or "UMC"). Sorry, I can't cut any deals with Tesla on the whole $650 UMC kit price :? For $200, I will attach the J1772 plug to the UMC. No warranty, expressed or implied. No claim of merchantability.

http://shop.teslamotors.com/collections/model-s-charging-adapters/products/model-s-mobile-connector-bundle" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Here ya go, 40 amp capable and works with a Tesla Model S, or a LEAF:

Here is the UMC owner's manual:

https://www.teslamotors.com/sites/default/files/blog_attachments/ms_mobile_connector_guide.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

When you attach the respective $45 plug, it will automatically use the following amperage:

.............................................VOLTS / AMPS................kW
NEMA 5-15 .......Standard Outlet 110 V / 12 A...... 1.4 kW
NEMA 14-50......RVs and Camps. 240 V / 40 A...... 9.6 kW
NEMA 6-50 .......Welding Equip... 240 V / 40 A...... 9.6 kW
NEMA 10-30......Older Dryers...... 240 V / 24 A...... 5.8 kW
NEMA 14-30......Newer Dryers..... 240 V / 24 A...... 5.8 kW

TonyWilliams: I noticed the Tesla MC "Owner's Manual" indicated that this portable EVSE could stop charging due to a "Thermal Fault". I don't expect that you should know everything about the workings of this EVSE, but do you agree with my guess that this fault is probably just an indicator of high ambient temperature rather than high connector temperature (either input or output)?

It doesn't have ANYTHING to do with connector temperatures. I add that feature, however, with a 158F / 70C limit.

I've been looking for a 30 amp portable EVSE option too. From what I can tell there's still nothing commercially avail out there yet. The universal tesla mobile conversion looked interesting but it looks like that kit is no longer avail from Tesla. Anyone aware of other options? EVSEupgrade seems closest but only does 5kw I believe. Looking for a mobile option to do the full 6.6kw the leaf supports.

FYI: LEAF is equipped with a 6kW charger, not 6.6kW as Nissan erroneously specs it. Chargers (everywhere except Nissan) are usually spec'd by their output power to the pack. Thus, the original 2011-2012 LEAF had a 3.3kW but actually consumed around 3.8kW from the line. Now on 2013 and up they call it a 6.6kW charger, but that's what it consumes at max, while it only puts out about 6kW into the pack.

The 40 amp capable Tesla UMC (Mobile Connector) conversion to J1772 is indeed available as the JESLAtm, however the conversion was never offered by Tesla.

While this benefits Toyota Rav4 EV and Mercedes B-Class ED drivers the most (due to 40 amp capability), there are a lot of LEAF's using a JESLA, too.

$1000 and back ordered, not exactly the best option, I guess the wait continues

If you have a Tesla Model S UMC, then it's $299 to convert it. Currently, with Tesla upgrading all 30,000 UMC's to the new "heat" version, they are not surprisingly back ordered.

If you had to buy a new LEAF 12 amp 120 volt, here ya go:

Part Number - 296M13NA0A
MSRP $934.82

New LEAF brick at 20 amps 240v is ~$850 shipped from evseupgrade.com
