Lease and Vehicle Registration Question

Hi,

My Nissan LEAF lease is due January 1, 2016. I'm planning on dropping it off early on December 17th, 2015.

Do I need to do/pay the 2016 vehicle registration? I'm in Texas.

Also, when I drop off the vehicle do I need to contact the DMV/DPS to let them know I'm no longer responsible for the vehicle? Or does Nissan do that for me?

In California, I turned in mine 2 days prior to registration being due. I did not pay it, I gave the registration renewal notice to the dealer at turn in, and they said they didn't need it. I did fill out the release of liability form with our DMV (online) - I wouldn't rely on the dealer to do that for you, since it is to protect you, not them.
