Last summer I purchased for my wife a 2017 Leaf. I wanted to use Leaf Spy to keep on eye on the battery condition. I looked at the Wiki for usable adapters, but found all of them listed are not available. I did try 3 different ones, and none of them worked. They are:
BAFX Products 34t5 Bluetooth OBDII Scan Tool for Android
2015 Mini ELM327 OBD2 II Bluetooth Car Auto Diagnostic Interface Scanner
ANCEL V1.5 BT

With each one, I connect to the dongle via bluetooth, but I get read errors when it tries to connect to the Leaf. Today I searched again on Ebay for another dongle, and found that Ebay has added a compatibility tool. I searched for OBD2 bluetooth Nissan Leaf and got many results. I tried the tool and each time it says that it works with the 2015 Leaf, but not with the 2017 Leaf. Has anyone used Leaf Spy with a 2017 Leaf, and if so, which adapter did you use? Also, does anyone know why adapters would be compatible with the 2015 and not the 2017?

Thanks.

Don't know but I found this free Android app just today to provide a report of all the AT commands and versions supported by a given ELM327.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.applagapp.elm327identifier

A report I ran on a new one I bought that is supposed to handle high speeds (from some Tesla app builder sources). The app above just test for compatibility not speed tho. "KO" below means not supported as I understand it.

Code:
Scan date=2018-01-26 14:34:59
Device name=OBDLink LX
Device mac=##:##:##:##:##:##

I wouldn't bother w/such a tool. Who knows how they determine "compatible" or not? Don't waste any more time on eBay.

Assuming you're using Android, you could try these:

http://www.electricvehiclewiki.com/?title=Leaf_Spy_Pro&redirect=no#Clone_ELM327_Bluetooth_Scanner
http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=23776&p=491252&hilit=kiwi#p491252

Do NOT get the KW-902: http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=23776.

As I posted at http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=506937#p506937, the two I pointed to there work for me.

When I purchased mine three years ago, I found that it had to be a version 1.5 to work with Leaf Spy. The first one I bought was a version 2.1 and it would not work. This one should work: https://smile.amazon.com/UCar-Bluetooth-Scanner-PIC18F25K80-Diagnostic/dp/B072MDXGNQ/ref=sr_1_35?ie=UTF8&qid=1517050925&sr=8-35&keywords=elm327

I found it interesting that the Leaf Spy description does not mention a minimum ELM327 version. Also in that test app I mention above 1.5 is not listed for any of the AT commands. They jump from 1.4b to 2.0.

Scott, thanks for the link. That will at least let me know what protocols work with the adapter. I returned all the adapters I had, so I am not out $ but I did spend too much time tying to get them working.
The Wiki data is out of date, nothing there is available now.
I new about the V1.5 issues, and bought units that claimed to be V1.5.
I also purchased a unit off of Amazon that claimed to work with the car, but didn't.
Right now, I am not in a big hurry to solve this, but it would be nice to get something working at some point.

Forget the mention of version numbers or a minimum. Getting a "2.1" device might == doesn't work.

I found that Amazon does carry a couple listed in the wiki.

As for the bolded part, don't bother with that. Who knows what their definition is of "working" with a Leaf? It doesn't matter. It needs to work with Leaf Spy, not some arbitrary definition of "working".

Again, you're probably best off consulting the threads I pointed to and seeing what folks recently bought that has been confirmed to work. Order a couple different models that people recently said worked for them. Recent is likely important as who knows what those manufacturers change from time to time? What they produced at one point in time might work with Leaf Spy but later revisions may not.

When I was shopping for a used Leaf, I was in a time crunch (lease on my former leased '13 was ending soon), so I ordered two different ones (I already listed them), hoping at least 1 would work. First one I tried worked right off the bat. I didn't try the second one until MANY months later. It also worked fine and I'm still using that one, to this day.

Thanks.

I've used an LELink OBD2 dongle (from Amazon at "https://www.amazon.com/LELink-Bluetooth-Energy-OBD-II-Diagnostic/dp/B00QJRYMFC") on two 2015 LEAF SVs, a 2015 S (on dealers' lots) and a 2017 SL (at a Drive Electric event), with LeafSpy Pro on an iPhone 7. I recall LeafSpy showed about 80 AHrs for the 2017 SL, so the dongle was apparently working.

On the 2015 S, I had a similar problem to what you report. The dongle was connected to the LEAF (as shown by its LED being on) and LeafSpy was running on the phone, but they would talk to each other over Bluetooth LE despite restarting the app, turning the LEAF on and off, and replugging the dongle. The salesman suggested rebooting my phone, and after I did that, it worked. It shouldn't ever be necessary to power cycle the phone, except sometimes it is.

I found a paper online on data extraction from the OBD port on the leaf. It states that the Leaf protocol is "mode 6 (ISO-15765-4 CAN". I checked several of the OBD dongles on Amazon and found that all of them do not support this protocol. I just ordered an adapter that supports the protocol, and a splitter cable for OBD connectors. When I get and test the adapter I will report the results. I thank everyone for their input.

What was the result? Have a link to what you ordered?

I wouldn't bother looking for such protocols. Just use ones that are reported to work recently and/or recommended by Turbo3, author of Leaf Spy.

The two I ordered in July 2015 based upon experiences/guidance here and on the wiki worked just fine.

Im wondering if people are having trouble with the Bluetooth obd connector, or the software connection on the phone?

I bought both an android AND Apple version, and they both work... It just takes a little time to get the Leafspy settings correctly....

I remember that the first few times I connected the Bluetooth adapter, leafspy did not recognize the data. I needed to go into the "settings menu" (the little gear picture) and set the correct OBDII choice and then do the password of 1234..

I think we should have a step by step procedure available for new users, because I cannot imagine that so many connecters reportedly do not work on Leafspy.

My reasoning is... All OBDII connectors must be reading the car's OBD plug correctly... (that is a standard interfaces). ALL cell phones should be able to connect to the Bluetooth signal.... (Have you ever heard of a phone that cannot connect to Bluetooth speakers or headphones??) I really think the problem is to get leafspy settings to the proper Bluetooth settings..
