Anything to see here, or just move along?

The manufacturer boldly proclaims that the new Qashqai will be "the most important car in [the brand's] modern history" and "a model that will redefine the crossover sector and set new standards across the board."

That's a pretty bold statement; hard to imagine how they could say that about anything that doesn't have a plug. Look at the glowing outline on the front where the charge port hatch is on the Leaf.

So, the fact that the car was unveiled today and there's ZERO further chatter on it says it all. "The most important car in [the brand's] modern history" my ass. Does it sound like a nice car, sure, but what's so special about it?

Unless one pictures that the Nissan execs might hate the idea of EVs and think of the Leaf as an annoying side-project that Ghosn has forced them into, and inevitably doomed?

Seems that way for Renault too?

Ghosn might want EVs to success, and be seen by politicos to be pushing that way, but is that the reality of the mindset at the coal-face, or are the occasional spanners being thrown into getting EVs to market?

Maybe Nissan is skipping the PHEV evolutionary stage, and planning to bring out the first crossover without an ICEV?

Nissan Qashqai EV

On top of a potential Nismo halo model, the firm also revealed that its electric vehicle range could extend further to models such as the Qashqai.

Nissan’s chief performance officer, Trevor Mann, told us, “We’re not saying yes to anything and we’re not saying no to anything. What we do have is the available technology. The good thing about having the available technology that works is that it opens a lot of decisions to you that others may not have.

“I think that we are in a position where we can contemplate what technologies we have and therefore how to use them and which products to use them in.”

Although Mann didn’t confirm a future production model, with Cartier strongly hinting that we’ll see a new Nissan Leaf EV within two years, developments in Nissan’s battery technology helping to boost range could make an all-electric Qashqai viable.

~30 kWh pack standard?

But why not offer a larger pack and/or the 4wd range-extender as options, also?

Nissan Juke and Qashqai crossovers could go electric

Nissan's future models are set to be able to accommodate pure electric powertrains, opening up the possibility of all-electric versions of the likes of the Juke and Qashqai.

“We’re leaders in crossovers and a leader with Leaf and we will combine those two in the future,” said Gareth Dunsmore, director of the Nissan’s zero-emission business unit...
