A few days ago, I got a chance to meet a pair of Australians in the middle of a truly epic journey. In 2011 the challenge was British Columbia to Baha in a LEAF. then it was coast to coast in a Tesla. Both were great achievements in their day but this one I think will stand alone for quite a while. Meet the team traveling nearly the entire length of the Americas (yes BOTH of them) on mostly Sun power only!

A great adventure no doubt but... and its a biggie

Route Del Sol will ONLY use power that is 100% renewable. Yes, they have plugged in a few times on their journey so far but it was powered by solar (3X) or hydro (a few times). Otherwise its Sun power.

This hits me in a lot of different ways and yeah, they spent a week in one spot because of sunless days. They charged for 2 days at 800 watts which proves that yeah, even when its cloudy, solar still works and it works SLOWLY... They basically gained just enough charge to run the amenities in the van. Nothing left over to store. But they have planned this to take 2 years so, despite how far they have gone, they still have a long way to go.

Realize Joel took the ferry from WA to AK hitting port and then drove the van up thru Canada to Fairbanks when he picked up Keegan and they then hit the Arctic Circle where they sat for 3 days recharging (they were near Turtle when they got there) It was there the "official" journey began.

I feel such attempts, like the around the world solar flight a couple of years back, while no doubt personal accomplishments simply have no practical utility, and are nothing more than stunts. Now, putting say 4m^2 of panels on the roof, hood and/or sides of a production BEV and having that run the A/C and other hotel loads in hot weather as well as providing battery cooling/heating and even some limited charging when parked strikes me as a far more practical use of P.V., e.g. Sion: https://sonomotors.com/en/sion/
