Good news!

http://insideevs.com/nissan-leaf-based-electric-suv-debut-next-month/

But it won’t go on sale until 2019.

Hot on the heels of the Leaf’s premiere yesterday, rumor has it Nissan will adapt its hardware for a fully electric SUV. Autocar has it on good authority the model in question will premiere as early as next month at the Tokyo Motor Show, but the actual launch won’t take place sooner than 2019. This leads us to believe we will first see a concept rather than the final production model.

If true, this is good move. Afterall there is no inexpensive EV SUV in the market. Tesla Model Y won't be here for 3+ years.

In the long run, Nissan will have an entire family of EVs and the report goes on to mention a sedan is also in the works by using the same platform that has underpinned the new zero-emissions hatchback. The latter is set to use a 40-kWh battery pack, with an optional 60-kWh version to follow.

This is what Nissan needs to be doing. If they do follow through with this, then this will have been the earth-shattering announcement they made on the 5th.

Another teaser video, of the SUV concept.

Might turn out to be better looking than the 2018 LEAF, and couldn't have a much worse name.

PLEASE announce an AWD option...

Indeed! Considering the popularity of AWD in some of the larger EV markets, and the fact that AWD can be implemented in an EV with little or no net efficiency loss relative to 2WD, this should be a no-brainer.

Here in California, AWD is seen as a virtual necessity by many who spend time in the mountains, mainly because the authorities tend to require snow chains on 2WD vehicles even when there's only an inch or two of snow on the roads.

Also, EVs continue to be more popular among buyers who are more affluent and/or educated, precisely the demographic that often tends to be more inclined to take trips to the mountains. Here in SoCal, practically any EV with fast charging capability can reasonably reach the mountain resort areas, the high costs of CHAdeMO charging notwithstanding (high costs relative to the current, subsidized, low gasoline/diesel prices).

This is a better view of the model (though a bit small):

It will be called the IMx available "...in the very near future...in the next few years..."

320 kW twin motor AWD! and 600 kilometer range.

Spectacular autonomous concept IMO, but it sure doesn't look like something likely to be on the market for the 2019 MY.

AN interview with more details and a promising timeline:

Nissan unveils crossover EV concept with more torque than GT-R

The design looks futuristic, with its chiseled face and plethora of slits. But executives say it previews a host of technologies Nissan Motor Co. aims to bring to market starting around 2020.

The electrified drivetrain technologies will arrive around then, while the advanced autonomous driving features come two year later, around 2022, executives said.

The IM in its name comes from Intelligent Mobility, the current Nissan buzzword for bundling electrification, connectivity and autonomous driving. The x stands for crossover.

"This is not a dream concept car," said Taisuke Nakamura, the vehicle's program design director. "This is something that can be realized in the near future."

The concept tantalizes on two fronts where Nissan's flagship Leaf electric hatchback falls short. The first is range, with the IMx envisioning much better performance than the just-released second-generation Leaf. The second is serving up something in the red-hot utility segment, where consumers increasingly hanker for electrified options...

Nissan executives have been hinting for months they want an electrified crossover...

It also foreshadows a new dedicated EV platform Nissan wants to debut around 2020.

The architecture underpinning the IMx will support EVs across numerous segments in a layout that delivers a flat vehicle floor with ample room for battery packs, said Toshiyuki Nakajima, manager of Nissan's advanced engineering division. The EV platform will be shared with alliance partners Renault and Mitsubishi Motors, he added.

"It was decided to launch a common platform for EVs," Nakajima said. "Different kinds of vehicles are going to be produced -- small-sized cars, hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs and large-sized vehicles. So, this platform is going to be used for producing these models."...

Great looking preview and it sounds like the Alliance skateboard platform is the key to the new model(s).

No real surprises on the timeline but I wish it was launching in '18 as a MY19. But at the end of the day, all automakers will be competing with EVs, so it is better for NIssan to have a well-design 2nd generation platform rather than rushing it to maintain their first mover advantage.

I wonder if the AWD will make it as a production option? And that listing of model types is tantalizing... I would still enjoy a small-ish 2 door commuter car with a nice interior. I know, I know -- a niche (EV) of niche (2 door) of a niche (Small) of niche (nice interior), but I can still dream, right?

The part of the IMx demo I had a hard time believing was full autonomy.

But if the system is already working in a prototype, and this date is correct...

Nissan tests fully autonomous prototype technology on streets of Tokyo

Public road demonstration of next-generation ProPILOT technology shows significant advancement

2017/10/25

TOKYO – Nissan today demonstrated a prototype of its most advanced autonomous driving technology, planned for real-world use from 2020, on public roads in Tokyo.

Nissan Motor Corp. tested the next-generation ProPILOT technology on a modified INFINITI Q50 sports sedan. The technology enables the vehicle to operate autonomously on urban roads and freeways, beginning when the driver selects a destination using the navigation system, until arrival.

The prototype’s artificial intelligence uses input from 12 sonars, 12 cameras, nine millimeter-wave radars, six laser scanners and a high-definition map to analyze complex scenarios in real time and navigate smoothly through challenging city conditions – such as crossing busy intersections. These hardware upgrades, along with software improvements, also ensure smooth transitions when encountering obstacles in the road. This results in a human-like driving feel that gives passengers piece of mind.

“Ingenuity is at the heart of everything we do at Nissan,” said Takao Asami, Nissan’s senior vice president in charge of research and advanced engineering. “Our next-generation ProPILOT prototype showcases technology that will be available for real-world use from 2020. Today’s demonstration is another example of our successful work toward creating an autonomous driving future for all.”

The demonstration follows the recent launch of the new, zero-emission Nissan LEAF, equipped with ProPILOT technology that enables single-lane autonomous driving on highways. Nissan’s growing lineup of models with ProPILOT also includes the Nissan Serena, X-Trail and Rogue and will be joined by the Qashqai in 2018.

The description indicates a more advanced system than that Nissan was widely demonstrating last Spring.

Let me guess, still no TMS.
Of course it will have thermal management, just like every other Nissan BEV.

If you are referring to liquid cooling, and you suffer major symptoms of thermal degradation anxiety, you might want to put on some fresh depends before you watch, from about 30 seconds in...

Of course, that's just animation, and it could have a fluid circulating ATM system, not shown.

But since Nissan has never required ATM for the first three generations of LEAF packs, I think it's unlikely it will change with the gen four ~60 kWh pack or the gen five ~80 (?) kWh pack, shown in the video.

The real amusement for me came at the 2:30 mark where they felt the need to introduce female characters when it came time to review interior fabric selections
