As the article mentions; earlier this year this Swiss team won the European FSAE competition. (http://www.earthtechling.com/2013/07/an-electric-car-wins-prestigious-student-racing-event/) and it seems that the European competition may continue to allow BEVs to run against ICEs. In addition, 2nd place was also taken by a BEV. However here in North America, they have split the series into FSAE and FSAE - Electric, for 2014. What's worse is that they have a cap of just 20 competitors for FSAE - Electric for 2014 (http://students.sae.org/cds/formulaseries/electric/). By comparison there were over 120 competitors allowed for 2013 FSAE competition (http://students.sae.org/competitions/formulaseries/results/). I have a feeling that the split was done to prevent the series from eventually becoming all electric. It's no question if EVs were allowed to continue compete in FSAE for another 2 or 3 more years, no school w/ any serious intent to win would try fielding anything other than an EV. IMO, I believe this split was driven by EV-phobic sentiments in SAE.
