General Motors said it will start production late next year of the Cadillac ELR, a luxury version of the Volt, its high-profile electric vehicle.'

Like the Volt, the ELR will have both an electric motor powered by a lithium battery as well as a gasoline engine to generate electricity once the battery runs down. The Volt can travel about 40 miles on pure electric power.

Thought these gm media articles were excellent. SPORTs mode in the ELR (vs Volt) also adjust suspension.

I don't own a Volt and I agree: It is a childish, uninformed and uncalled for remark. And if they do it right and price it right, I'd consider it...

Quite a few owners that have both the LEAF and a Volt who would disagree with your childish remark.

Not sure why you are thinking it will have DC L1/L2 charging. It looks like it will have the new version of the Voltec platform but battery size will likely be the same. I think it will only have AC L1/L2 just as the Volt does today.

As GM says that the Spark EV will be equipped with the 'new' quick charge option (much smaller car, etc.) thought that they may use it on this new Caddy as well ... check the post on the AutoWeek article. If they stick with just the Volt platform, etc. I could see them getting some mileage on the original tooling for the drive/battery system, etc. but I doubt it with how much 'upscale' they want to go with it

Remember, it's going to be a 2 door, 4 seater. I assume they've done their market research, but that kills it for me.
There are other 2 door Cadillacs but you are right it would seem nice to "hide" 2 rear doors like they are doing in some other cars.

Keep in mind that Cadillacs (and other luxury cars) are not big sellers anyway so it seems like a reasonable fit based on existing cars in that class. They get to add various high end features and "justify" the price. They get to test a new power train as well (we think/hope). Could feed into the CUV *but* tough to get good CD and EV 40 miles on those profiles.

See charts here:

Personally, I'd much rather see the Volt powertrain appear in a small wagon or CUV, preferably with AWD. I think Ford and Mitsubishi have the right idea here.
I like the way you are thinking!

Seems that DC L1/L2 typically is going to pure BEVs with no backup ICE. BEV folks want to stretch their wings beyond the "100 miles" per charge. Various PHEV/plugs-ins are coming out and they only have AC L1/L2

From all reports, owners appear to like their Volts very well. It wasn't a good fit for me, but I wish GM and all manufacturers who make cars with a plug (and plan to sell in volume, compliance cars need not apply) success.

Another Avalanche to Escalade conversion  No thanks.

This is actually the original. They are building the concept car that many people fell in love with.

“The ELR will be in a class by itself, further proof of our commitment to electric vehicles and advanced technology,” Reuss said in a keynote address at the SAE Convergence Conference in Detroit. “People will instantly recognize it as a Cadillac by its distinctive, signature look and true-to-concept exterior design.”

Production is scheduled to begin in late 2013.

The ELR is the production version of Cadillac’s Converj, a concept vehicle revealed at the North American International Auto Show in 2009.

Yeah, if you believe the press releases.. probably it will be a Volt with a new nose, some plastic body cladding and lots of decals :)

Actually there is a demand for coupes and they are rare at GM now (Corvette and Camaro only?), not many buyers for a compact luxury vehicle will even need to use the rear seat. I hope the concept looks make it to production.
