FPL Solar Together: Solar as a service

Interesting program from FPL, subscription based participation in solar energy production. https://www.firstcoastnews.com/article/news/local/fpl-solar-power-without-solar-panels-soon-to-be-available/77-dc864191-e6d1-4dd4-be97-b4588f4a2c48 I signed up for 6kw, expected cost $1.48/month, which...

What's the real story with US oil/gasoline supply security

With Iran ratcheting up tensions in the Strait of Hormuz it seems like a good time to reexamine this question. One of the hater arguments against EVs has always been "I can fill up in two minutes and go another 300 miles". Most people now are too young to remember the 1974 oil embargo when...

Can this gas WH be replaced with electric?

A family member's house currently has a gas WH that is quite old and I'd like to replace it before it fails. I'm trying to decide if I can go electric. The water heater is the only thing that currently runs on natural gas in the house, so it would be a simplification to get rid of it. Also the...

Is a 60A breaker ever OK on 6/3 romex?

I used to live by the old rule of thumb that 6 was for 50, 8 for 40 and so on, but have come to learn that it's more complicated depending on the C rating. Is romex (or NM) always 60C? Seems like that should be 55A max, is a 60A breaker "close enough"?

Carlos Ghosn ousted over financial misconduct

Will his successor be more or less aggressive in furthering EVs? https://www.cnbc.com/2018/11/19/renault-and-nissan-carlos-ghosn-to-be-arrested-for-financial-violations.html

    Armchair load panel calculation

I've got an extra L2 station I should probably should sell (actually two of them, a Schneider and a CC, both 32A) but I was thinking about putting one of them in my vacation rental. I figured it might add appeal to eco tourists, serve the EV community and maybe get me a bit more revenue in the...

    Free: front license plate holder

Found this while cleaning out the garage... the black plastic piece for putting a license plate on the front bumper (wasn't needed here in FL) new in plastic bag complete with two screws. This was from a 2016 but I imagine it would fit any 2011-2017. Any leafer who can use it PM me and I'll...

Forget rising sea levels, we're drowning in plastic

https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/planetorplastic/ The proliferation of plastic packaging and the failure to recognize and deal with the impacts is astounding.

Trump to propose big hike in gas tax

Will ICE efficiency breakthroughs hamper EV adoption?

https://www.cnbc.com/2017/10/25/with-new-technology-mazda-gives-spark-to-gasoline-engine.html 30% efficiency improvement, less demand for gas, lower gas prices, repeat viscous cycle.

Solar for grid tied AND backup - where to begin?

With recent power outages here after Irma whole house generator flights of fancy have returned. I'm thinking instead of sinking a bunch of money into something with zero ROI for the next decade waiting for another outage that may not even happen it's time to start thinking seriously about solar...

Hurricane/TS Harvey - fuel shortages possible?

You'd think shutting down the largest refinery would have an impact http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/08/30/nations-largest-refinery-in-port-arthur-texas-shut-down-mayor-says-whole-city-is-underwater.html All the yocal quips that they'd never buy an EV until they can recharge in two minutes are...

    Four battery replacements under warranty?

Family member has a 13 month old 30kwh SV with a little over 12k miles that has now lost two bars. At that rate of degradation they could be replacing the battery 3-4 times under the capacity warranty, and at the 10 year mark the car could be approaching lawn ornament status. (No way we're...

Chicago Fire episode - totally bogus?

Did anyone see that Chicago Fire episode last night with the Leaf crashed into a pole? Pretty sure that scenario is complete nonsense, can the body become "energized" like that to someone outside? Check it out on Hulu I think NBC just spread a ton of FUD on the EV movement. Season 5 episode...

Extended warranty - still a bad idea?

I normally avoid these like the plague, but hearing stories about LEAFs dying like NOGASHOLE's and another guy with a $1300 shift knob I'm wondering if maybe this might be worth considering on a "slightly used" Leaf I may be getting. Any thoughts on this...

The Russians are coming! (for Citgo)

http://money.cnn.com/2017/04/10/news/economy/russia-us-oil-company-citgo/index.html Well this could certainly get interesting. I've always thought that all the subsidies and carpool lane stickers in the world won't do as much to generate excitement over EVs as a good old fashioned gas shortage.

Toyota succumbing to reality it's going to be EVs not FCVs

Toyota's strategy may have been wrongheaded, but their position in the automotive market and the weight that carries should not be taken lightly in considering the significance of this shift in thinking...
