LEAF's 12V battery behaviors - and why they go bad

Does anyone one for sure when the 12V charging algorithm was changed/improved/corrected? Ie: from what years of production is 12V charging a non-issue? 2014? 2015? (I'm not asking about the telematics battery drain issue - just the 12V charging - thanks!) Best, Tal

NissanConnect EV / Telematics Hardware Update, for the post-2G world

AFAIK when the EVSE (read: charger) is connected the 12V battery is not being charged by the main traction battery through the DC-DC converter (read: big battery to the little battery) - which is the only way the 12V battery gets charged. So actually, AFAIK, keeping the car plugged in and not...

    2013 Leaf - Dead 12-Volt Battery every 2 Weeks

Ummm... I really, really doubt it's a dead battery. My battery was 3 years old when I had the TCU updated - and died THE NEXT DAY. Occam's Razor suggests it was the TCU - which turns out later it was. I'd make an appointment at your Nissan dealer sooner rather than later and put your foot down...

    12v battery dies repeatedly

If the 2G --> 3G telematics upgrade was done, it's the culprit. Cross-post here: http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=12448&p=497352#p497352 Executive summary = Nissan (manufacturer not dealer) flew over their telematics engineers to look at my car, and promptly confirmed that it...

    2013 Leaf - Dead 12-Volt Battery every 2 Weeks

Hey everyone, Looks like we can at least put the cause of the issue to rest. As Occam would suggest - in my case at least (2013 car getting the 2G --> 3G telematics upgrade) was the cause of the problem. Nissan (the manufacturer, not the dealership) flew over their engineers who designed the...

    2013 Leaf - Dead 12-Volt Battery every 2 Weeks

Yes, dealer gave it back after two weeks with the delightful response that they couldn't figure out what's wrong but that "it turned on for three days in a row" (that's verbatim, BTW). They also suggested I take it to another dealer "to get a 2nd opinion". This is the 3rd time it's been to this...

LEAF's 12V battery behaviors - and why they go bad

Cross-posting myself as it's relevant: http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=494786#p494786 Here's the full post: From the above, what i'm hearing is that people did not have 12V battery problems before performing the 2G --> 3G telematics upgrade but do have 12V problems after. I know...

NissanConnect EV / Telematics Hardware Update, for the post-2G world

From the above, what i'm hearing is that people did not have 12V battery problems before performing the 2G --> 3G telematics upgrade but do have 12V problems after. I know that from my experience, with 65k miles on the car, my problems began within 2 days of having the telematics upgrade done...

LEAF's 12V battery behaviors - and why they go bad

Want to double down on this! My last new battery (lucky #5) in the car (currently at the dealer for the 3rd time for this 12V discharge issue) was only able to charge to 68% of it's original (ie: 100%) capacity. That's after one discharge (read: damage) cycle from the car that forced it to well...

    2013 Leaf - Dead 12-Volt Battery every 2 Weeks

Yes, I remember reading your post. Unfortunately, if merely having the battery die completely (of the batteries I've replaced since December the voltages have read as low as 2V, 6V, and 7V - so if that's all it takes to reset the telematics unit - it's been reset several times. The charge...

    2013 Leaf - Dead 12-Volt Battery every 2 Weeks

Hello, My situation is this: since I upgraded the telematics unit in December I've gone through four batteries. The first died one week after the upgrade, which I (naively) attributed to the car being 3 years old. The second died two weeks later. The third lasted a month. And the forth lasted a...

Poll : Number of miles before losing the first bar

Just saw this morning that I lost my first bar at 59,860 miles. :-( The way I maintained battery health is by: Nearly never charging to 100%. I set the car to charge to 80% when I get home, then charge for a further half hour in the morning before I leave for work, so there's minimal time...

Forged Rays Volk Wheels installed - stock wheels are HEAVY!

Just want to point out that the bore isn't load bearing - it's used mostly for convenience to hold and center the wheel while tightening the lugs. The lugs do 100% of load bearing - otherwise there wouldn't be plastic centering rings. So it's only using smaller bore wheels on bigger bore cars...

Dealer recommendation for Leaf servicing around Los Angeles (I'm near Pasadena)

Backstory - I'm a not incompetent shade tree mechanic - have replaced transmissions, clutches, installed new suspension (shocks/struts/springs), etc. I bought this car ~because~ it has little maintenance needed. But it's still a car with shocks, struts, bearings and still needs service. The...

Ahhh - that picture you posted of work-near-the-chargers looks like the top level of the Woodland Hills Kaiser - where I sometimes charge. Studio City is pretty close too! Cheers, Tal

Kosei 15" rims fit over front brake calipers?

Most 16" rims will fit (although some high-offset ones won't!), but I'm hoping that either the super light Kosei K4R (under 11 lbs.!) will clear the giant Leaf brake calipers, or the still lightweight 13.5 lbs. Kosei K1 will. The reason a 15" is preferable to a 16" is that 15" tires (for the...

Dealer recommendation for Leaf servicing around Los Angeles (I'm near Pasadena)

Addendum! I work in the west San Fernando Valley, so anywhere along the way (101/134) is fair game, as well as pretty much all of the SFV. Cheers, Tal
