    7500m/annual brake fluid change

Last weekend, I tested my 2011 Leaf (4.5 years in service) brake fluid with the Phoenix Systems brake fluid tests strips. The brake fluid scored about 20ppm Cu on their color scale. The company says you should definitely replace your brake fluid at 200ppm. Or if you want to be cautious, you can...

    The Battery Replacement Thread

What's going to happen in 2021 when somebody's 24kWh battery from their 2016 Leaf S needs to be replaced under warranty? Is Nissan going to crank up some long dead battery factory to generate old cells that haven't been produced for years? Or are they just going to stick in some new modules in...

    The Battery Replacement Thread

The reading was from August 19th right after I lost the bar. I live in Austin, TX.

    The Battery Replacement Thread

    I lost my 4th bar on August 19, 2014. My VIN is in the 8400's AHr=43.39 SOH=66% 391.39V Hx=45.07% 34,346 miles

    The Battery Replacement Thread

Our 2011 Leaf dropped its 4th bar last month (at about 33,000 miles). I've been waiting to take it in until the 2016 Leaf was announced. I stopped by a Nissan dealership today and asked about paying some money to upgrade to the 30kWh battery instead of getting the replacement 24kWh battery. I...

Why no Chademo in Central Texas?

I would guess the one at Town North will probably be operational within the next few weeks (if it isn't already). On a related note, I emailed Austin energy asking about the installation of additional CHAdeMO chargers in Austin. The guy I emailed said that South Point Nissan is going to install...

Why no Chademo in Central Texas?

Town North Nissan is in the process of getting a CHAdeMO charger. I just looked up permits and it says they passed final inspection on it about a week ago. It still might not be operational though because they might be waiting on Austin Energy to put the final meter in for them.

Both FOBs died at the same time?

Both of mine went out at around the same time and that makes sense. The key is basically a little radio transmitter that is constantly transmitting at a low power. It has to constantly transmit since you can get in the car without touching any buttons to indicate that it should transmit. I'm...

    Wife's ticket in Leaf

The front plate is "required", but I've been driving one of my cars for 6 years without one. I even got pulled over once and didn't get a ticket for not having it. I would say that it's basically a bonus ticket and you would almost certainly not be pulled over just for not having a front license...

At what Electric Rate would owning an EV not make sense?

I'm not surprised that the cost of electricity in Hawaii is very high and volatile. From 30 seconds of googling, Hawaii produces about 75% of its electricity from oil. So you're basically fueling your Leaf with oil in Hawaii. That being said, the benefit of solar is so high that it seems insane...

Daimler delays launch of 2012 Smart ForTwo EV

I drove an electric car2go Smart ForTwo in Austin the other day. It has a peak power of 30kW and was super sluggish. It makes the Leaf feel like an F1 car.

When does capacity loss lead to functional failure?

At what point does diminished battery capacity prevent the car from outputting the full 80kW of power or driving more than say 50mph? Would the battery have to get down to 2% capacity to increase the internal resistance enough to cause a large power loss? Or is it something more like say 30%? I...

Comparing the Nissan Leaf to the BMW M3

The Leaf is not fast at all, but the throttle response is really damn good. I didn't drive my evo for a couple of weeks because I was just driving the Leaf. When I went back to my evo, the first time I stomped on the gas, I momentarily thought my car was broken. I thought, "what the f? I just...

2011 SV Demo - what to pay & another concern

I had a deal to buy a demo 2011 Leaf SV demo in Texas for $29,900. When it came for the transaction to happen, the dealer lost interest. I ended up buying a demo 2011 Leaf SL demo from S.C. for $29,900.

How many miles before you need new tires?

That's surprising that you can get in the range of -1* to -1.5* front camber. The stock setting on my evo was -2*. After I burnt through my first set of tires, I toned it down -1* camber and that's still pretty aggressive.
