I can confirm that the handle part can easily be removed from the cable, since I did replace mine last year (on the 2011) with a junkyard pulled part. I'll try and take a photo tomorrow of the spare I have.

I've had a 2011 leaf now for over 5 years, was doing what I wanted(sort of) but now I got a 2013 last week to replace it. That caused me to come back to this forum that I had glanced at over the years. =P I foresee me being pretty active for awhile so no more lurking! Wish I had done more...
