    Hydrogen and FCEVs discussion thread

So what we have established is that for at least one person (me), a BEV costs less, provides better performance, and better utility than an equivalent ICE. And for at least one person (you), it does not. Anecdotes are typically not very useful in a broad term, but I was addressing the...

Good point. The closest ICE equivalent to my Bolt is probably a VW GTI. They are similar size and performance, although the Bolt is much larger inside. You can get a new Bolt for $25k but a GTI starts at $30k. So not the same price (and that's just purchase price; cost of ownership gets better...

Non EA or EVGo fast charger thread

My understanding is that CHAdeMO is closer to Superchargers than CCS, since CHAdeMO and Superchargers use CAN but CCS uses PLC for communications. Plus Tesla has already built an adaptor one way, so the other way should be easy. There are already chargers out there with the adapter on-site so...

This has been in the news a lot lately, actually. Here's some background: https://insideevs.com/news/523734/tesla-giving-away-supercharger-advantage/ Here's some conjecture on the motivation: https://insideevs.com/news/524551/infrastructure-bill-funding-tesla-superchargers/

    Volkswagen ID.4 CUV

Good to know. We recently added a third child to our family and the Bolt is ... tight for 5 people plus a small dog to travel in. The 6 of us went camping last weekend and even with the 16cuft roofbox, things were stacked on laps. Not ideal. I have one EA locally, and others well placed for...

Non EA or EVGo fast charger thread

New York's "EVolve NY" program is starting to pick up some steam. This week they opened their 8th location, in Syracuse. They partnered with Mirabito in the Central NY region. Each new station will have 4x 350kW dual-standard chargers. They also have a nice cafe with comfortable, inviting...

    Volkswagen ID.4 CUV

Similar here. I have two cars, one BEV and one PHEV. Once I upgrade the BEV to a Bolt, I only drive the PHEV within its electric range. The only times the car exceeded that were specifically to stretch its legs and burn out some stale gas; the Bolt would actually have been the preferred...

    Electrify America Network

Very interesting. I don't think EA is planning on Brattleboro chargers in the immediate future. Their focus is the Boston-Montreal Corridor, and they haven't even broken ground yet in Colchester. Maybe it is EVgo, as part of their 2,700 new locations? They already have a charger in...

    Electrify America Network

Syracuse, NY is open for business, although it has been slow to show up on their app. I was able to use the station successfully with a credit card. Binghamton, NY sits without a transformer, hopefully that will be live by fall. That will complete the Syracuse -> Philadelphia corridor they...

    Chevrolet Bolt & Bolt EUV

I hear rumors on another forum that the update also changes the DCFC curve for older Bolts. Instead of the staircase ramp-down, it is claimed that we will get the more gradual curve, which is probably a true Constant-Current -> Constant-Voltage profile. I haven't heard anything from Chevy yet...

I'm pretty sure that generic-looking is what they were going for. VW is looking to win over Rav4 / CR-V customers, not Model Y / Mach E customers.

    EVgo infrastructure thread

I can't wait to see installations like this from EVgo. In the Northeast, I have yet to come across an EVgo station with more than one, nominally 50kW, charger. In reality, most are limited to 100A (some support 120A), so you really only get 35-40kW out of them. Lame compared to EA.

Demand Charges, storage costs and Public DCQC

Yes, battery storage would certainly be better, but at a cost. Each site operator would have to make the call whether it is worth adding that cost in order to provide a higher charge rate. Keep in mind that ultimately it is the consumer who pays the premium. Until batteries are much cheaper...

Demand Charges, storage costs and Public DCQC

Lower power services avoid demand charges with the trade of higher per-kWh rates. Many new residential meters are going in with 300A service, which is nominally 72kW, and they don't have demand charges attached. So clearly a 50kW charger could be installed on such a service. I think this is...
