I wouldn't. Drive it for a while to make sure things are working out. Then have a reputable small shop do those things if you can't diy. New battery, good for you.
Because of no home charging and the distance to your mom's house, I recommend the Chevy volt as your interim solution for a couple of years. The volt's battery is great and it's electric range is enough for your needs.

Yes, dealer applied coatings are crap. Most "rust proofing" is either applied poorly or has poor adhesion, or both. Results are that water actually gets trapped and held against the metal, can't escape.
